School's Out for Summer!

Yes I have the Alice Cooper song running round and round in my head this morning. It reminds me of breaking up from school each summer when I was younger.

Now it's my eldest son's turn. This morning is his last day at nursery and he is excited about it, as it means he will be going to "big" school and the Shark's class. Poor little love doesn't realise that he has a 7 week gap first, which I need to fill with things to do!

I made some gifts for him to give to his teacher and the teaching assistants. This seems to be much more the done thing than when I was at school.  As we had a joint collection from the whole class anyway I kept it simple by with a re-covered notebook, post it note holder and a pen with the barrel covered in the new 2013 - 2015 In colours DSP (designer series paper).

Stampin Up Brights DSP paper craft Flower Shop Tracy May

I followed a tutorial by the lovely Sam Hammond Donald (a fellow Pinkie) for the notebooks. You can see her tutorial here.

For the sticky note holders I simply made it up. I knew I wanted a flap over the bottom as well as the top so I played around with some card stock until I had what I wanted.

The measurements are for a 7.5cm x 7.5cm sticky note pad. Cut your card stock to 19.5cm x 8.5cm. Score at 4cm, 5cm, 13cm and 14cm. You then cut three panels of DSP to 8cm x3.5cm, 8cm x 7.5cm and 8cm x 5cm.  I then stamped and punched out a flower from the Flower Shop stamp set and glued it on the front slightly hanging over the top flap. Inside I have used some velcro circles I got from Amazon to keep the flaps closed.

The pens were amazingly the trikiest part. I had wanted to insert a roll of DSP into the barrel but the ends of the pens would not come out so I ended up glueing the paper onto the outside. A bit messy but I think they look great.

  2. Love, Love, Love this set. Such a cute, complete little project. How did the pens hold up over time. They are super cute. but I would be worried about the oils in the skin interacting with the paper and causing it to look not so great, or breakdown over time. Thoughts?

    1. Thank you so much :-)

I haven't asked the teachers I gave the pens to, how they are holding up but you are probably right about the paper deteriorating with time. The pens do have a comfort grip on the barrel above the nib which I did not cover so hopefully they're surviving :-)

    1. I'm in the UK so we don't have Walmart. We can get those types of pen too but I couldn't source them locally and had left it to the last minute to make the gifts. I'm keeping my eye out for some so I have a stock ready as and when needed :-)
